Cancer Warrior (see links below for navigation)

Welcome to the companion Web site to "Cancer Warrior," originally broadcast on February 27, 2001. The program follows the extraordinary odyssey of surgeon-turned-researcher Dr. Judah Folkman, who, together with colleagues at Children's Hospital in Boston, has spent over 30 years searching for ways to curb cancer by cutting off blood flow to tumors. Here's what you'll find online:
  • A Tribute to Dr. Folkman
Judah Folkman passed away in January 2008. Read a remembrance from "Cancer Warrior" producer Nancy Linde.

  • Dr. Folkman Speaks
In these compelling interview clips from the footage shot for "Cancer Warrior," hear Judah Folkman talk about the ground-breaking discoveries that he and his team have made over the years.

  • Cancer Caught on Video
Follow a video chronicle of cancer growth and angiogenesis (birth of new blood vessels) in these through-a-microscope videos shot by Dr. Ann Chambers and her colleagues at the University of Western Ontario.

  • Designing Clinical Trials
In this excerpt from Dr. Folkman's War: Angiogenesis and the Defeat of Cancer (Random House, 2001), veteran science writer Robert Cooke offers a cogent summary of the clinical trials of angiogenesis inhibitors that began in late 1999.

  • How Cancer Grows (Hot Science)
This interactive feature lets you follow the progression of a malignant tumor as it advances from a single cell to a grape-sized growth that spreads to distant locations within the body.

  • Accidental Discoveries
From the chance discovery of quinine as a malaria treatment in the 17th century to Alexander Fleming's accidental encounter with penicillium mold in 1928, some of medicine's most important advances have occurred through serendipity. Read about seven of them here.

  • Help/Resources
This expanded list of Web sites and other resources includes cancer treatments and a detailed list of Frequently Asked Questions written by Susan Connors, Folkman's patient-liaison specialist.

Plus a Teacher's Guide.
